Intranet Development
Background
Hospital for Special Care is a non-profit long-term acute care hospital founded in 1941. They are dedicated to providing exemplary care that improves patients' quality of life, and fostering a growth-oriented work environment for employees.
The Challenge
The hospital employs over 1,200 individuals, including front-line medical staff, administrative and support staff, and an increased hybrid workforce. They faced challenges with communicating with a large and diverse group of employees many of whom were left misinformed and unaware. The lack of an engaging, easy-to-navigate central avenue/location to access information created barriers in sustaining an informed, involved and inspired workforce.
Our Idea
Hospital for Special Care states that their mission is to “create a work environment and climate where employees are supported to provide excellent care”. As the project manager, I brought a cross-departmental group of engaged staff together to build a new intranet service that uses enhanced technology and improved accessibility, while aligning with the hospital’s mission to foster an enterprise-wide sense of community and collaboration.
Solution
The core team proposed an intranet service based on its researched and identified needs that would reduce fragmentation of communication, and enhance communication across the organization. From the user-friendly interface to its customizable homepages to its options for employee engagement, such as forums, polls, and recognition tools, the newly developed and launched intranet successfully engaged staff from across the organization.
Results
The intranet has met and exceeded its benchmarks set in its strategic plan, with an over 50% login rate, 48% using the search function, and has an 8% engagement rate. After two years I have trained and continue to manage over 15 authors. The key areas we have developed together upon launch have proven to be the most visited content.
